One of my most frequent questions about the blinds in our showroom is how to clean them. Whether you have hard or soft window treatments, regular cleaning will greatly improve the lasting lustre of your blinds and shades. Here are a few simple tips to preserve you’re investment.

A clever way to remove dust and debris from Silhouette, Cellular and Pirouette shades is to use a hairdryer on a cool setting. Have the shades on the open position and hold the nozzle a few inches away from shade and blow from centre to left or right working your way along the shade.

For any debris that remains stuck a careful flick should do the trick allowing you to blow it out with the hair dryer

Vacuum blinds often with the brush attachment. Vacuum across the slats, not up and down

Use a lamb’s-wool duster, again working across the slats and starting at the top. Do not use plastic dusters

When dusting or vacuuming vertical blinds, brush downward only, as the slats often become unhooked if you brush upward

Use a rubber sponge, also known as a dry cleaning sponge (found at hardware and paint stores), to remove dust and residue from both fabric and vinyl blinds. Simply wipe the dry sponge firmly across the blinds

For tough spot cleaning, spray a mild all-purpose cleaner onto a clean dry cloth and wipe the soiled area of the blind. Never spray the cleaner directly onto the blind

If you are concerned about damaging your fabric blinds with soap, test your sponge in an inconspicuous area before going after the stain

Make sure to have a dry towel or sponge around to soak up any access moisture quickly from fabric shades

The less water and soap you get on your fabric blinds, the better.

You can wet wooden blinds when cleaning, but don’t soak them. Clean them in place instead of removing them as you would for other types of blinds

If fabric blinds become very dirty, take them to a professional cleaner (contact us for reputable companies)

Do not try cleaning blinds by spraying them with a car-wash hose, dunking them in the tub or one slat at a time

A microfiber cloth can also be great at removing loose dirt from your fabric blinds

Additionally, always wash new stains immediately as they occur — do not wait for them to dry.

I also wanted to point out that though you may be concerned about the management of dust collecting on your fabric shades, many of Hunter Douglas’ products are pre treated specifically to repel dust.

Windows need to be adequately dressed to allow keeping the light and wind out, when desired. Windows are dressed using varied styles of valances, shades, and curtains. Shades are devices that are used to intercept the sun and its rays, protect the room from direct light, and avoid disturbance to the inhabitants. They are also effectual in shading the room and preventing the variances of weather affecting the room. They are made of different materials and accordingly are of different types.

The simplest of window shades consists of a thin material, similar to paper, that is strung on a roller, which is spring loaded. However, more advanced shades proffer the ultimate style statement and are luxurious in their color selections and textures. Some of the shades are definitive in convenience and can be even accessed with a remote control.

A classic roller shade is sometimes the answer for all the requirements in terms of shades for windows. They are elegant, simple as well as uncomplicated and inexpensive. They are available as light filters or used for darkening rooms. They are found to be very useful when it is important to minimize the heat of the sun but not block on the view. It is observed that use of modern fabrics that are combined with simple utilities make these roller shades a fashionable option.

Many varieties can be selected from these roller shades, two of the major ones being standard and reverse rolls. There is also the possibility of choosing a cassette head rail system. Many additional accessories can be attached to the shades, such as ornamental hems, tassels, and ring pulls. This makes the shades attractive and gives them an animated look. It is also possible to upgrade the basic roller shades by including unremitting cord loops as well as motorization that makes it very easy to lower and lift the shades.
